Editing Your User Profile

As a blog author, it's important for you to have both an Avatar (signature picture) and Biography entered.  This is how author information will be presented in your blog:
So, let's modify your profile.

Once you have successfully logged in, you will notice that the links in the upper right of the screen have changed to Signed in as Chelsea Starion  | Sign out  | Help.

If you click the Chelsea Starion link, you will go to a series of tabbed pages where you can modify your profile:

The Membership Tab:

By default, your user profile will probably be largely empty, unless you previously provided us with bio information or a photo.   The tabs in the profile editor are:

Membership This is key data that uniquely identifies you to our system and governs your access to its features.  The information displayed here corresponds to the required entry fields on our Join page.

Regardless of what you may have entered on the Join page, you can freely change any of these items by clicking the associated Edit buttons.
Personal The Personal tab contains additional information about you that will be displayed to the public.  Here is where your photo and biographical sketch are maintained, along with additional information.
Newsletters
As mentioned in the documentation on the Join page, each of the Annenberg Public Policy Center initiatives maintains a series of email newsletters that are sent to lists on a regular basis.  The Newsletters tab provides a handy means of managing your subscriptions to any or all of these newsletters.
Impersonation Not everybody will see this tab.  As described more fully under the Group Publishing help topic, our system includes an Impersonation feature that permits authorized members to pose as other authorized users for purposes of posting blog entries under their names.  Impersonation can only be granted by a Talking Justice administrator and the people they may impersonate are also assigned by an administrator, based upon prior consent by the person to be impersonated.

Editing Membership Information

The Membership tab contains entries for User Name, Password, Email and Time Zone.  This section will describe how to change all of them.

To change an item, click the Edit button at the right:
Changing User Name:

When you click the Edit button, the User Name display area becomes an editable form.  Enter your new choice of User Name into the text field as shown.  Then click Save.  To exit without making any changes, click Cancel.

Changing Password:

When click the Edit button, the Password display area becomes an editable form.  You must first enter your old password; then your choice for a new password, twice.  You must enter the new password exactly the same twice as a safeguard against typing errors.  It is in your interest to type these entries; don't just copy and paste them!

To commit your changed password, click the Change Password button.  To exit without making any changes, click Cancel.

Changing Primary Email:
The email address used for membership is considered your primary email address.  Unless you specify otherwise (on the Personal tab), it is held private and not revealed to anyone outside the system.  Any time that the Talking Justice system needs to contact you (as, for instance, to satisfy your Forgot my Password request), it will do so at the primary email address.

You can change your primary email address by clicking the Edit button.

When you click the Edit button, the Email display area becomes and editable form.  Type a new email address into the entry field and click Save.  To exit without making any changes, click Cancel.

Changing Time Zone:

When you click the Edit button, the time zone display area becomes an editable form.  Choose your correct time zone from the drop-down selector.  To make the time zone change permanent, click the Save button.  To exit without making any changes, click the Cancel button.

The Personal Tab

As mentioned above, the Personal tab permits you to enter and edit information that will more clearly communicate with the public who you are.  As with the Membership tab, each item can be changed by clicking the Edit button.  In some cases, you can provide additional information by clicking the Add button.

Adding/Changing an Avatar:
In Internet forum terminology, an Avatar is a signature image.  For many members of online communities, the avatar is a fanciful way to present an alternate identity to others; and you may see virtually any kind of image used as an avatar.  For Talking Justice blogging purposes, we ask that your avatar be an actual photographic image of yourself.

Unless we have already uploaded an avatar image for you, this item will most likely be blank.  You can add an avatar (or change an existing avatar image) by clicking the Edit button.

When you click the Edit button, the avatar display area becomes an editable form.  Any existing avatar image is displayed on the left of the upper portion of this form.  Click the Browse button to locate a new avatar image to upload:

A Choose File requester will appear:

Use the familiar controls in this requester to locate an image file on your computer and then click the Open button.  You may select images of type: .JPG, .GIF and .PNG.

Note: If you prefer to select an image that is already on the Internet somewhere, you can enter its web address - its URL - into the File name: text field and then click the Open button.

Note also that if the image you select is larger than 100 pixels in either width or height, it will be rescaled automatically when uploaded.

When an image has been selected, click the Uload File button.  This loads a copy of the image into the New Avatar area of the form.  This is a kind of staging area where you can compare the new avatar with the old one before actually replacing it.

To accept the new avatar, click the Replace button.

The new avatar as it appears in the Personal tab and as it will appear in your blog.

Change Name:
You can choose to provide us with more complete name information: a Title, Middle Initial, etc.

Note that this information is stored in the Talking Justice contact management system and used (for instance) to generate mailing labels.  However, it's the User Name as displayed on the Membership tab that will be displayed along with your photo on your blog posting page.

When you have completed the fields in the Name section, click the Save button to commit them.  To exit without making any changes, click Cancel.

Adding/Changing Email Addresses:
As mentioned, our system supports multiple email addresses.  The one that appears on the Membership tab is your primary email and is used any time our system needs to communicate with you.  It is normally kept private.  If you wish to enter additional email addresses, you can do it from the Personal tab.  Click the Add button:

When you click the Add button, the email display area becomes an editable form.  You can enter a new email address into the Email entry field on this form:

When you have provided a new email address, click the Save button to add it to your list of email addresses.  To exit without making any changes, click Cancel.

Changing Email Options:
Because this section of the Personal tab is closely coupled with the Talking Justice email notification system, it will be discussed in the Help file for Email Notification.

Add/Edit a Biography:
The other essential component of your authorship identity is a biography.  This should typically not be more than 250 words. To enter (or edit) your bio, click the Edit button.

When you have clicked the Edit button, the bio display area becomes an editable form.  In this case, it is a rich-text form with controls for typographic enhancement, hyperlinking, etc.

Enter your biography.  When done, click the Replace button.  To exit without making any changes, click Cancel.

Add/Edit your Signature:
You can enter a signature to appear below any communications you generate from the Talking Justice community.  To do so, click the Edit button:

When you have clicked Edit, the Signature display area becomes an editable form.  As with the biography form, this is a rich text editor permitting typographic styles.

Enter your signature as you wish it to appear and click the Replace button.  To exit without making changes, click Cancel.
