I find the July, 2007 program fascinating. The reasoning
that “abstinence-only education” doesn’t change behavior and therefore it is
a waste of money is a ludicrous argument.
Following this thread, we would not teach teens to drink more water and
avoid sugared drinks. We would not expose them to the value of eating 5 fruits
and vegetable servings every day. The
truth is, we all should teach teens what we believe is right whether or not it changes
their behavior immediately.
Abstinence-only until marriage certainly works for me. I am
almost 70, married almost 48 years to the bride of my dreams and she is the
only sexual partner I have ever had. I have told hundreds of teens that it
works for me and I never have to worry about flash-backs with other partners. It
doesn’t matter to me that most will not follow my role-model for sexual
activity, diet, working ethic or whatever the topic of the day may be. I will still share my story and what teens do
with it is their business.
