RE: Still Segregated? Race in America’s Schools

Although it is true that most schools in the U.S. are either made up of mostly white or black students, this does not mean that racism is still a problem. Schools that are made up of mostly black students are in communities which black people were forced to live long ago. Despite the fact that segregation no longer limits black people to live in ghettos (and when I say "ghetto," I mean a community inhabited a single ethnic group, which is its true meaning), it was still hard for them to get the money move out of the ghetto and into a new home. As a result, these communities still consist of mostly black people and there are only black students in the schools for those areas.

The way I see it, there's really no way to fix this problem without forcing people to move out of their homes and into an entirely different community even if its against their will. That's not racism that's just how things are; although it could definately be said that all of this is a result of racism. But the fact still remains that there are simply less black people living in the U.S. than white people. So even if all schools had an equal amount of black and white students in every school in America, there would still be more white students.

RE: Still Segregated? Race in America’s Schools

I don't that the segragation is still in our school but I feel that racism will always be around, not just within blacks and white but people make fun of others for being ploish or french or any other ethnic backround. I just don't see why people hate other people for their ethnic backround, it's not like you chose who or what you were and others didn't get to choose who they were going to be so I feel we should all be glad we made it this far...

RE: Still Segregated? Race in America’s Schools

I believe that still today schools are segregated. At my school they have seperate offices just for the minorities in my school. And is that fair for the other kids who arent minorites. The other kids can use the regular office but we cant use theres. I dont understand it.

RE: Still Segregated? Race in America’s Schools

I think some of you are missing the whole idea. I dont think they meant a seperate office for different races. They mean whole different schools. And I Definately think that schools are still segregated. I was reading an article about Rosa Parks and how she feels that the dream of the brotherhood she was trying to create is still far away. Also, three fourths of black and latino children attend schools with relatively little whites. That is a statistic I read in newsweek and from what I see, its not far from the truth. but how can you really stop segregation in schools? How can you really end racism? as long as theres racism there will be segregation so I guess we just suck it up and take it or attempt to make it stop? right. peace!

RE: Still Segregated? Race in America’s Schools

i don't think schools are segregated anymore. Black, white and everyone else come together at the same public school everyday. But at my school they have a minority office for mainly the natives and i do not think that is fair and makes a public school seem more segregated. We have a couciling office for everyone, that includes the natives. So they shouldn't get special treatment they should have to use the same office as everyone else so that our school isn't segregated at all.

RE: Still Segregated? Race in America’s Schools

We have come a long way from where we were as far as segregation goes, but it is still there. We should be trying anything possible to limit it, no school should be segregated. When schools are segregated it makes everything in the public eye also segregated. People of different races don't get to know eachother and therefore see eachother as just another color that they don't talk to. Everyone is equal and we should view people as a whole not as two seperate groups based on skin color.

RE: Still Segregated? Race in America’s Schools

I am from MS and there is still segregation in the public schools of our capital city. The statistics break down to 96% black and 3% white. Definately not integrated. Why?

Re: RE: Still Segregated? Race in America’s Schools

What if we dream big!  Let's plan cluster communities where people of various incomes can live, shop, access public transit to work or other special locations.  We have different subsidies for housing, yet all have one thing in common.  Poverty, Race, Income, Disability, even Age play a role where we live.  If we simply identified people who need housing subsidy, made payment or voucher, then let people choose housing, MAYBE we can achieve diversity in education and live like one people.
