The Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development
is named after Ronald H. Brown, a St. John’s University law school alumnus, who
served as the first African-American Secretary of Commerce and the
first African-American Chair of the Democratic National Committee.
To honor his contributions to equal opportunity in the domestic workplace
and expanded opportunities in the global marketplace, St. John’s University
established the Ronald H. Brown Center. Its mission is "to engage in legal studies,
research and outreach focusing on issues that affect the lives of
underrepresented people while simultaneously educating law students
to be leaders on issues of racial, economic and social justice."
