The National Senior Citizens Law Center
advocates nationally, promoting independence and well-being of older people. The only national organization focused principally on the legal needs of the elderly poor, NSCLC challenges illegal government policies in the courts; seeks full and fair implementation of existing programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI); promotes the availability of quality long-term care and of alternatives to institutionalization, and works to protect the well-being of people living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities; advocates strengthening of the safety net for low income older people; and advises advocates across the country on how to protect the rights of older people in their communities. NSCLC also is a leader in reporting, analyzing and questioning current efforts to use the federal courts to create and employ new doctrines limiting the power of Congress to protect disadvantaged people, and preventing beneficiaries from enforcing benefits and rights established by federal laws.
